Your First Time at Del Mar: Quick Tips for a Perfect Day at the Races

Heading to Del Mar Racetrack for the first time? You’re in for one of the most iconic SoCal experiences — ocean breezes, beautiful horses, and that unmistakable buzz as the gates fly open. Here’s how to make the most of your day without feeling like a rookie.

1. Arrive Early and Explore

Get there at least an hour before the first race. You’ll beat the crowds and have time to grab a drink, find your spot, and stroll through the paddock where horses are saddled. Watching them up close is part of the magic — you’ll start noticing who looks calm, confident, or ready to run.

2. Dress Smart (and Comfortable)

Del Mar is where “the turf meets the surf”, so dress with a bit of flair but keep it weather-friendly.

  • General admission: sundresses, polos, nice shorts, or linen.

  • Turf Club: jackets for men, elevated looks for women. And don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and maybe a hat — the sun doesn’t play around here.

3. Betting Basics

You don’t need to know all the lingo — just start small.

  • Win = your horse finishes first.

  • Place = first or second.

  • Show = top three.

Even a $2 bet makes things exciting. Pick a name, color, or number you like and see what happens. If you’re into strategy, grab a program or use the Del Mar app for race details.

4. Eat, Drink & Take It All In

Food and drinks are half the fun. Try The Brigantine for seafood with a view or grab tacos and a beer at one of the trackside stands. Between races, people-watch, check out the paddock again, or wander down to the rail for a closer look at the action.

5. Watch the Post Parade

Just before each race, the horses come out for a quick walk in front of the stands — that’s the post parade. It’s the perfect moment to snap a photo and get a last look before they load into the gate.

6. Stay for the Finale (and the Sunset)

A lot of people head out early, but stick around for the last race. The crowd thins, the atmosphere mellows, and the Pacific sunset behind the grandstand is the perfect way to end your first Del Mar day.

Final Thought

You don’t have to be a racing expert to enjoy Del Mar — just bring curiosity, a little cash for small bets, and an open mind. Between the thrill of the horses, the energy of the crowd, and the backdrop of the ocean, it’s easy to see why this track has been a California favorite for generations.
